Productive thinking is the ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems, make decisions, and generate ideas. In essence, it’s about being efficient and effective in one’s thinking process to achieve desired results.
John Dewey aptly put it, “we don’t solve problems, we outgrow them.” This is where productive thinking comes in, allowing us to expand our horizons and approach problems in an innovative way. Productive thinking is a powerful tool that not only helps overcome obstacles but also unlocks potential and fosters growth.
To cultivate productive thinking, it is essential to keep the following key components in mind:
1. Guard your mind
It’s difficult to think actively and productively when one’s mind is distracted or unstable. A guarded mind fosters focus and concentration, making it easier to approach problems with clarity and intention.
2. Curiosity
Curiosity is the driving force behind productive thinking. A curious person is always looking for new information and exploring different perspectives, which translates to novel solutions to problems.
Albert Einstein famously said,
“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”
One very creative and curious thinker was Steve Jobs. He said,
“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.”
3. Open-mindedness
Productive thinking requires an open-minded approach. Often, the solution to a problem lies outside one’s own preconceived notions of what is possible.
4. Critical thinking
Productive thinking is not just about generating ideas but also about evaluating them with a critical eye. Critical thinking skills allow for questioning assumptions, identifying biases, and evaluating evidence.
Steve Maraboli once said,
“The quality of our thoughts determines the quality of our life.”
The ability to think critically helps us make informed decisions and reach effective solutions.
5. Persistence
Productive thinking requires determination and perseverance. The road to success is often littered with obstacles and challenges, but a persistent individual will find ways to overcome them.
Calvin Coolidge once said, “Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated failures. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
In closing, productive thinking is an essential skill that can help individuals achieve their goals and overcome obstacles.
